Have you met Brian? If you’ve ever seen Brian at The Feldy, his smile is one of the first things you notice. It’s hard to believe that not long ago, he felt far away from the sense of connection he has now. A chance visit to the centre in the hopes of finding some company turned into real friendships – and the discovery of his new happy place.
The path that led to The Feldy
Brian lives on the Isle of Dogs and has been retired for some time, quietly managing most things on his own. But when he lost both of his parents, life changed in a way he couldn’t have prepared for. The days felt longer, and the silence at home grew heavier.
With no local place he could simply pop into for a chat, he struggled to find moments of connection in his day. To break up the stillness, he started taking long bus rides with no real destination. The journeys didn’t necessarily solve anything, but they gave him movement, a changing view and the quiet comfort of being around others.
Everything began to shift when one of his bus journeys bought him to Aberfeldy Village, and Brian walked through the doors of The Feldy community centre. He didn’t know what he’d find, but he was immediately met with warmth, a friendly hello and a spark of something hopeful.
Stepping into something new
As Brian got more familiar with the centre, he tried Feldy Fellas, a men’s group built around moving, talking and checking in with each other. Then came bingo, bike rides, and lunches. Each activity brought a new face, a shared story or a moment of unexpected laughter. Week by week, The Feldy became a place where he felt more relaxed, more connected and more himself.
The Feldy also offers more than activities. Through Clean Slate, an organisation that provides free support and training to help people take control of their money and find work, Brian learned practical ways to manage his money day to day. These sessions made budgeting feel less daunting and helped him rebuild a sense of control. With each bit of guidance and every conversation, his confidence grew.
