New murals bring splashes of colour across east London

18/10/2024

Four brand new murals have popped up across east London – bringing a splash of colour to Tower Hamlets. We’ve worked on these in partnership with Tower Hamlets Council, Gateway Housing and a variety of artists.

The four murals can be found at:

  • St Paul’s Way, Bow
  • The Eva Armsby Family Centre, Shadwell
  • St Botolph’s Passage, Bromley-by-Bow
  • Northleigh House, Bow

St Paul’s Way mural

A brand-new mural celebrating nature in Bangladesh and Britain is spread across numerous shop shutters on St Paul’s Way – including PFC, Al Safra and Ozzy’s.

Julie, who is the manager of Toy Home Centre, said: “They look great and have really brightened up the area! The families who come love them and the kids always have a smile. The boys who did the works, were absolutely lovely too!”

The colourful mural has been created by London-based illustrator Andrew Werdna and Global Street Art. It was commissioned by us, along with Gateway Housing, and was finished during London Mural Festival.

The mural is a celebration of south Asian, Bangladeshi and British heritage through nature. It contains:

  • the magpie-robin, the national bird of Bangladesh
  • the red-girdled mining bee, which can be seen in the nearby Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park
  • the house martin, a British songbird found across east London waterways that is currently under threat from climate change
  • the black Poplar tree, which was once prevalent around Poplar

Speaking about the new murals, Daniel Lynch, ACCENTS Project Manager at Poplar HARCA, said: “The shutters were covered in graffiti and a lot of people in the community had complained about them. We hope the new artwork will be another welcome addition to the streetscape at St Paul’s Way.”

Shiraj Miah, Operations Manager (Housing Manager) at Gateway Housing Association, said: “We’re delighted to have collaborated with Poplar HARCA on the mural project at St Paul’s Way. We believe that this project will have a positive impact on our residents by fostering a sense of pride and belonging. It provides an opportunity to celebrate our shared history and culture, making our neighbourhood feel more connected and welcoming.”

St Paul’s Way is an award-winning scheme that has brought 109 new homes, namely Bow Garden Square, a mosque and a primary school to the community. The development was delivered in partnership between Poplar HARCA, Tower Hamlets Council and St Paul’s Way Trust School.

St Botolph’s Passage mural

Artist Will Redgrove worked with students from St Agnes Primary School on the new mural in St Botolph’s Passage in Bow.

Students looked at the history of the area, exploring the rich history of industrial action and equal rights activism – from the Matchgirl’s Strike to the East London Federation of Suffragettes.

The design was then developed into a floor painting to help create a safe passage for students and local residents.

This community work is part of our new development at neighbouring Stroudley Walk, in partnership with Muse.

Eva Armsby Family Centre

Six young people have created eight stunning new murals at the Eva Armsby Family Centre in Tower Hamlets.

This is a collaboration between AeroArts, our youth service Spotlight and Tower Hamlets Council. Centre staff asked for vibrant and engaging artwork that promotes a sense of joy, inclusivity and togetherness. Thanks to the creativity and dedication of the young artists, this space for local families feels fresh and welcoming to all.

Northleigh House and Lansbury West estate

New artworks including a ladybug have been painted on bike lockers at Northleigh House on Powis Road and Lansbury West estate off Farrance Street.

HARCA, Tower Hamlets Council and locker companies Cycle Works and Bikeaway carried out the artwork together with artist Skyhigh.

One resident on Lansbury West estate, Katie, said: “I love the new artworks. Thank you to the artist.”

Cllr Shafi Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Environment and the Climate Emergency, said: “Murals are a creative way to highlight our unique and historic borough while celebrating the communities that call Tower Hamlets home. These lockers will improve cycling capability to encourage greener travel alongside brightening the local area for all to enjoy.”
