From Botswana to Bow: Charles’ journey to finding home in east London

09/05/2025

After years of renting in London, Charles recently took a big step - he bought his own home in Bow through the shared ownership scheme. Raised in Botswana, and living in different parts of the world, Charles relocated to the UK 6 years ago and now calls Heron Wharf in east London his home.

Why east London felt right

After growing up in Botswana and later living in various parts of the world, Charles eventually settled in Bethnal Green, where he shared a place with a friend. But when his friend moved out, he realised he no longer wanted to live in shared housing

As much as he loved Bethnal Green, it was unfortunately out of his price range if he was going to live alone. So, he began exploring nearby areas and found that while Bow and Poplar are still in east London, they offer more affordable options. This meant that he could stay close to the part of London he felt most connected to.

“When I was looking for new homes, east London was the obvious choice because I already knew it so well. This is where I call home.” he says.

Charles’ path to ownership

Charles initially considered continuing to rent, but when he saw the high costs of one-bedroom and studio apartments, he began to rethink his options. That’s when he came across the shared ownership scheme.

After a few months of looking into how shared ownership works, Charles felt confident enough to go for it. He ended up finding a lovely two-bedroom place at Heron Wharf – a home that really suited what he was looking for.

Stylish homes with standout perks

The new homes at Heron Wharf are designed for everyday living, meaning they’re modern, comfortable, and easy to make your own. The kitchens are practical and well laid out, with plenty of workspace and everything neatly integrated. The open-plan layout gives the whole place a bright, spacious feel, and the bathrooms are modern.

But it’s not just the flat itself that stood out to Charles. The development also comes with some great extra perks, including a 24-hour concierge. A residents’ gym is opening this summer, with gardens and riverside walks also launching soon.  There’s even a swimming pool and spa on the way, which is expected to open in early 2026.
