Have you seen Malak perform? You might not believe she once struggled to speak up in a room, let alone take the mic. But after years of quietly showing up, trying again, and finding her voice through Spotlight, she’s now a confident performer, mentor, and creative force in our community.
A quiet start with big potential
Malak first joined Spotlight, our youth service, at just 10 years old when she was introduced to it by a friend. Back then, she was shy, hesitant, and unsure of herself. Group activities felt overwhelming, and she often found lyric writing and beat-making frustrating. She wanted to improve, but self-doubt held her back.
Still, she kept coming.
Growing through the challenges
With gentle encouragement from staff and the support of 1-to-1 mentoring, boxing, and music sessions, Malak slowly began to open up. These programmes helped her build resilience, express herself, and start believing in her own potential.
She didn’t always feel ready to perform, but each time grew stronger – and that journey shaped who she is today.
Finding her rhythm
Now 18, Malak is a completely different person. Over the summer, she threw herself into nearly every creative programme going – from performing at Spotlight’s 10-year anniversary festival to starring in a documentary and lighting up open mic nights.
She’s smiling more, connecting with others, and thriving creatively. Her lyric writing, production, and freestyling have all taken huge leaps forward. And she’s not stopping there… she’s actively working on her stage presence and pushing herself to grow even more.
