Hand it over: November key amnesty is here

29/10/2024

We all know there’s a shortage of affordable housing in London, and tenancy fraud is making it worse. The National Fraud Authority estimates that tenancy fraud costs taxpayers around £900 million each year.

Tenancy fraud happens when people live in our homes without the legal right to do so. This can include things like subletting or selling keys, both of which break our contract and the law.

We take this issue seriously. Our Community Safeguarding team will run a ‘key amnesty’ this November – where people committing tenancy fraud can return their keys without facing legal action or questions. By returning the keys, you’ll help make housing available to those who truly need it.

If you want to return your keys, please contact the Community Safety team at communitysafety@poplarharca.co.uk or call 0800 035 1991. They’ll guide you through the necessary paperwork to return the property.

However, if you are caught committing tenancy fraud, you could face a fine of up to £50,000 or even prison.

If you know someone committing tenancy fraud, please contact our Community Safeguarding team. If your information helps us recover the property, we’ll thank you with a £1,000 reward.
