Store safe: Don’t fuel a fire

20/10/2026

We would like to remind all residents about the safe use of sheds, garages, outbuildings and external storage areas.

Electrical Supplies

If you are planning to install or have installed an electrical supply to a shed, garage or any other outbuilding, please ensure that you have requested permission. Read our Alterations policy.

Once you have permission, make sure:

  • Work is carried out by a qualified and competent electrician
  • Electrical installations meet current safety regulations
  • Temporary or makeshift wiring, extension leads and DIY electrical connections must not be used as a permanent power source
  • Electrical equipment is regularly checked for signs of damage, overheating, or wear.

Unsafe electrical installations can cause electric shock, fires and serious injury.

Storage of White Goods

White goods such as:

  • Fridges
  • Freezers
  • Washing machines
  • Tumble dryers

should not be stored or operated in sheds, garages or outbuildings.

White goods can present a fire risk if stored in damp, poorly ventilated or unsuitable locations.

Storage of Combustible Materials

No petrol, diesel or other fuels should be stored in sheds, outbuildings, balconies, communal areas or near buildings.

Do not store large quantities of:

  • Gas cylinders or canisters
  • Paints, solvents or chemicals
  • Timber, cardboard or paper
  • Furniture, waste or unwanted household items

Combustible materials can help fires spread rapidly and may put lives at risk.

Thank you for helping to keep your building safe.
