Young leaders start here

22/07/2026

Got ideas about what could make our community better? Want to meet new people, build your confidence, and create real change? Join our Youth Empowerment Board (YEB) and help shape the future of your local area.

What is the Youth Empowerment Board?

The YEB gives young people a real say in decisions that affect their communities. As a member, you’ll work alongside Poplar HARCA and our youth service Spotlight to share ideas, influence local projects, and make sure young people’s voices are heard.

Why join?

Being part of the YEB isn’t just about meetings – it’s about building skills and opening doors.

You’ll get the chance to:

  • Develop leadership skills and grow your confidence
  • Build confidence in public speaking and presenting ideas
  • Meet professionals from a range of industries
  • Gain valuable volunteering and work experience
  • Strengthen your CV, personal statement and future applications
  • Help plan and deliver projects that make a difference in your community
  • Network with other young people and local community leaders
  • Access exclusive trips, events and celebration opportunities
  • Have your voice heard and help shape local decisions
  • Learn new skills that support your education and career goals

Who can apply?

We’re looking for young people who:

  • Live in Poplar, Bow or the wider East London area
  • Be aged 15 to 19 (or up to 25 if you have special educational needs or disabilities)
  • Have ideas and opinions about local issues and community matters
  • Want to represent the voices of other young people
  • Be passionate about creating positive change in your local area
  • Feel confident sharing your views, or be keen to build your confidence
  • Enjoy working with others and meeting new people
  • Want to make a real difference in your community and beyond

No previous experience needed – just enthusiasm and a willingness to get involved!

💬 Hear from current YEB members

"Being on the YEB has made me more creative, more independent, increased my creative skills and made me more confident in many ways."

Raya

"Definitely take every opportunity that comes your way. When you join, put your hand up, participate, speak out, stand out and take part in everything you can. It's not an opportunity that you get every day."

Emaan

"My main highlight was when we got Jack Petchey Awards. We got to pick and activity we want to do and fulfil it. We celebrated the winner, and everyone had fun together."
