This programme is your introduction to the hospitality and catering sector, preparing you for work in a wide range of service roles.
If you’re interested in a career in the hospitality and catering sector, this programme is a great place to begin. It will cover a range of introductory skills which are relevant to the sector, alongside generic employability skills which are needed across all sectors.
Course details
On this course you will complete:
- Gateway Qualifications Level 1 Certificate in Hospitality and Catering
- Highfield Level 2 Award in Food Safety for Catering
You will cover units such as…
- An Introduction to Hospitality
- Customer Service in the Hospitality Industry
- Food Hygiene and Safety
Beginning October 2026.

Where can this course take me?
This will help prepare you for employment in roles such as:
- Front of house roles such as wait staff, bartenders, baristas, café assistants
- Back of house roles such as catering assistants, kitchen porters
- Other service industry roles such as shop assistants, customer service assistants, etc
You may also progress onto a Level 2 certificate or diploma in Hospitality and Catering. There’s a range of qualifications that could complement this such as Housekeeping, Hospitality Services, Food Service, Professional Cookery, or Food and Beverage Service.
Eligibility
To join this course, you must meet all of the following criteria:
- live in London
- have the right to live and work in the UK
- be 19 years old or older as of 31 August 2026
- not be in full-time education
- not be on a student visa, skilled worker, or sponsored visa
- be unemployed or low income (earning below £28,860 per annum)
