Buying more shares
Buying more shares in your home is called staircasing.
Why buy more shares?
- Lower rent – the more you own, the less rent you pay
- Build your investment – increase the equity you own in your home
What next?
- Check your lease – your lease explains the rules around staircasing, including any limits or timing requirements
- Decide when you’re ready – if your lease allows, you can choose to buy more shares in your property whenever you’re ready
- Get a valuation – for standard staircasing, a RICS-accredited surveyor will assess your home’s current market value, which will determine the cost of the shares you want to buy
- Secure your financing – this might involve updating your mortgage or arranging additional funds
- Complete the legal steps – your solicitors and ours will handle the legal work needed to update your ownership share
- Enjoy the benefits – once everything is complete, your rent will be adjusted based on the share still owned by Poplar HARCA
