Voluntary work placement
First-year student Linh supports the Community Development and Wellbeing team through City University Micro-Placement programme.
Through our Volunteering team, this year, we were a host participant in City University’s Micro-Placement Programme. The Micro-Placement programme offers students an exciting way to gain professional experience via short summer placements with a wide range of UK-based organisations like Poplar HARCA.
For four weeks, Linh helped with our community-driven communication at our Community Development and Wellbeing team, bringing with her a fresh vantage point.
“The course I am studying is more number-based, so coming into an environment requiring more creativity was initially a challenge for me. However, with support from my placement supervisor, I overcame this.
Everyone made me feel so welcome, from senior managers to caretakers. I was given autonomy to work on tasks. In addition, I was frequently requested to draft text for social media and graphic content and collect information for the social action campaign London Challenge Poverty week.
My time at Poplar HARCA has pushed me to improve my existing skills and develop new ones. It will be a precious memory for me as my first experience in a professional working environment from which I learned so much. As a result, I have a better understanding of the world of work, life after University and a newfound appreciation for charitable work supporting those in need.”
“I would highly recommend volunteering at Poplar HARCA, especially if you are passionate about giving back to your local community. The Community Development and Wellbeing team have a real zeal for helping others and has created a nurturing environment where they appreciate talent – no matter how young or old or what your background is.”
