New affordable family homes in Bow

12 new one, two and three bedroom shared ownership flats, known as Tandem, form part of the same development, at Rainhill Way and Talwin Street.

Located in the Devons Road area, every new home has its own balcony or private outdoor space. Residents living in flats at Rainhill Way and Talwin Street have access to private communal garden areas too.

The Begums and their three children have lived in Tower Hamlets all their lives. They moved into one of three new terraced family houses at Devons Road, this spring.

Mrs Begum said about her new home:

“We were overcrowded and had been on the waiting list to move somewhere bigger, for 14 years, since my son was born. I loved my old flat. It was where I raised my family. But with everyone growing up fast, my son really needed a room to himself.

We all have more privacy in the new house now we have our own bedrooms. We have private outdoor space too, with a balcony, as well as a garden. My niece and nephew come over all the time and have water fights outside!

In our old flat, we could never have our extended family to stay. Now we can. There’s nothing more important to me than spending time with family.”

The developments have transformed what used to be three empty and disused plots of land in Bow, including Birchdown House car park and old garage sites at Denbury, Huntshaw and Holsworthy House.

Former ward councillors Dan Tomlinson and Zenith Rahman met with Mr and Mrs Begum and took a look inside the new affordable homes, in March.

Elsewhere this year, 22 local families have moved into new homes for affordable rent in Aberfeldy Village, with 17 more homes, of the same tenure, ready for residents to move into, this June. 5 new flats for affordable rent have recently completed at nearby Bromley High Street.

By this summer, Poplar HARCA will have provided Tower Hamlets residents with a total of 50 new affordable homes for rent, so far this year.
